Three lies, three sets of numbers. A fairway wood has to work from all of them or it is a tee club with delusions.
The Club Most Often Fitted Wrong
Almost every fairway wood sold gets tested off a perfect lie, usually a mat or a teed ball. Then it goes into a bag and spends its life being asked to move a ball off firm Midlands turf in August, from a lie with no cushion underneath it whatsoever.
Those are different clubs. A deep face that launches beautifully from a tee can be almost unusable off tight turf, and a shallow-faced wood that scoops the ball off the deck can feel unstable on a tee shot. Which one you need depends entirely on where you actually use it.
So this session starts with a question: is this a tee club, a second-shot club, or both? The answer changes every recommendation that follows.
Lies We Test From
- Teed — par five second shots and tight driving holes
- Clean turf — the standard fairway strike
- Tight lie — firm ground with no cushion
If the numbers only hold up on one of the three, we say which one and let you decide whether that is enough.
What Changes the Answer
Face Depth
Shallow launches easier off turf; deeper is more stable off a tee.
Sole Width
Wider soles glide through soft turf, narrow ones sit better on tight lies.
Loft Choice
Often more loft than expected, once the tight-lie numbers are in.
Shaft Weight
Frequently heavier than the driver shaft to steady the strike off the ground.
How Many Woods Do You Need?
Plenty of bags carry a 3 wood out of habit and a 5 wood because it was in the box. If both carry within twelve yards of each other, one of those slots is doing nothing useful and could hold a wedge or a hybrid instead.
The carry map answers this quickly. We plot the woods alongside the driver and the top of the iron set, and the redundancy usually announces itself within ten minutes.

Shorter than a driver session if you are fitting a single wood, longer if we are working out the whole top of the bag together with hybrids.
Booked Together
Fairway wood and hybrid sessions are usually best booked as one longer visit, since the two clubs compete for the same yardages and fitting them separately can produce two answers that contradict each other.
