The bottom of the bag is where scores are made and where gapping errors cost the most. It is also the cheapest part to fix.
Where Wedges Go Wrong
Modern Lofts Broke the Bottom of the Bag
Iron sets have got stronger year on year. A pitching wedge that was forty-eight degrees a generation ago is frequently forty-three now. Meanwhile specialist wedges are still sold in the same fifty-two, fifty-six, sixty configuration they always were.
The arithmetic does not work. A nine-degree jump from the pitching wedge to the gap wedge leaves a hole of twenty yards or more, right in the range where you most want a full swing. Then the gap-to-sand and sand-to-lob steps are four degrees each, producing two clubs that carry almost identically.
Fixing this rarely requires four new wedges. Usually it means bending one, replacing one, and binning the one that duplicates.

Turf Interaction
Bounce and grind tested across firm, soft and sanded trays. Columbia turf changes character between spring and late summer, so we fit for the harder condition and check that the softer one still works rather than the other way round.
Partial Swing Calibration
Half and three-quarter swings recorded for each finished wedge, so you leave with real numbers for the in-between yardages instead of a feel-based guess. This is the part golfers tell us they use most.

What Bounce Actually Does
Bounce is the angle that keeps the leading edge from digging. High bounce is forgiving in soft sand and lush turf and can feel like it deflects off firm ground. Low bounce sits cleanly on tight lies and punishes a steep strike into soft turf.
Which you want depends on two things: how steeply you deliver the club, and what the ground is like where you play. We measure the first and we already know the second, which is the advantage of fitting golfers who play within an hour of the bay.

Worth Knowing
- Wedge grooves wear out faster than golfers expect
- Bending a wedge two degrees changes its effective bounce
- Shaft weight in wedges is usually best matched to the irons
- Four wedges is not automatically better than three
Bring the Old Sand Wedge
The one that has been in the bag for a decade often still has the best sole for your turf. We would rather re-shaft that than sell you a replacement.
