Carry Versus Total: Which Number Is Actually Yours
One of these two figures is measured. The other is a simulation with your name on it. Guess which one everybody quotes at the bar.
Stand behind any launch monitor for an afternoon and you will hear the same exchange a dozen times. A golfer hits a drive, glances at the screen, and reads out the total. Never the carry. The total is bigger, and bigger is more satisfying. It is also, in almost every practical sense, the less useful of the two numbers.
What Each One Actually Is
Carry is where the ball first touches the ground. On a radar unit it is derived from directly observed flight — launch conditions, spin, speed, trajectory — and it is about as solid a figure as indoor measurement produces.
Total is carry plus rollout. And rollout, on every launch monitor on the market, is calculated rather than watched. The unit cannot see your ball bounce because your ball is hitting a net eight feet away. It applies a model: given this descent angle, this spin and this speed, on a notional fairway of assumed firmness, the ball would probably run this far.
Why the Guess Cannot Be Right
Consider what actually determines how far a ball rolls after landing. Turf firmness. Grass length and type. Moisture in the ground. Slope. Whether the landing area is uphill, downhill or cambered. Whether it rained on Thursday.
In the Midlands this variation is not academic. The same drive on the same hole rolls out dramatically differently in April, when the ground is soft and holding, than in mid-August when it has not rained for three weeks and the fairways are running fast. One strike, two totals, thirty yards apart.
Where Total Distance Does Matter
None of this makes the figure useless. Total distance matters for tee shots on holes with hazards at a specific range, and it matters for the general question of whether you can reach a par five in two. If you play one course constantly and know its summer run-out, your own observed total is genuinely useful information.
What it should never do is drive equipment decisions. A low-spin, low-launch driver setup will flatter itself on the total column because the model rewards a shallow descent with a lot of assumed roll. Fit yourself to that number and you will end up with a club that produces a fine total on a screen and lands twelve yards shorter on a wet Saturday.
The Same Logic, Applied to Irons
With approach shots the argument is even more one-sided. You are trying to land the ball on a green, and greens are watered, maintained and generally receptive. An approach shot that carries 148 and rolls 12 is not a 160-yard club — it is a 148-yard club that will run through the back of any green it lands on.

What We Do About It
In the bay, the carry column stays visible and the total column gets covered for most of the session. It is not a gimmick — it stops both of us being pulled toward the flattering figure during a shaft comparison. Every specification we write lists carry medians, and the yardage ladder is built from those alone.
Golfers occasionally find this frustrating in the first twenty minutes, because the numbers look smaller than the ones they are used to quoting. By the end of the session, once they have seen how much the total column swings between two configurations with nearly identical actual flight, the point tends to land on its own.
